Entire guest house, sleeps 4, in the Gallatin Canyon

The Flying J Bunkhouse is a stand-alone upstairs guest house in the Gallatin Canyon, off Highway 191 and right across from the Gallatin River and the cliffs of Storm Castle. It’s finished with high-end furniture, new appliances, and fast Starlink internet, and the living room window looks straight out at the canyon. Sitting about halfway between Bozeman and Big Sky, it’s an easy base for ski days, fly fishing, rafting, hiking, and Yellowstone trips, with three of the canyon’s best trailheads within five minutes.

Perfect for

In the heart of the Gallatin Canyon

Gallatin River

Across the road, with blue-ribbon fly fishing

Storm Castle

In view from the living room; trailhead within 5 minutes

Flying J

Lava Lake & Hell Roaring Creek

Two of the canyon's top hikes, within 5 minutes

Spanish Creek & the Flying D

5 minutes north, with bison herds and wildlife

The canyon is one of the most scenic corners of Montana. The stretch of the Gallatin across the road appears in A River Runs Through It, deer wander the property, and the Spanish Creek road north of here crosses part of the Flying D Ranch, home to one of the country’s largest free-roaming bison herds. The Bunkhouse sits next to National Forest, so wildlife is common; please give it plenty of room.

Where you'll sleep

Bedroom

King bed, with extra bedding for winter and a remote-control fan for summer

Living room

Queen sofa bed and two reclining loungers

Good to know: The Bunkhouse is an upstairs apartment above a garage, which stays locked. The nearest grocery store is about 16 miles away in Gallatin Gateway, so stock up on your way in. Neighbors live about 300 yards away, so please keep noise down, and because of wildfire risk, no campfires or smoking materials on the property.

The canyon through the seasons

Summer

Rafting and floating the Gallatin, fly fishing across the road, hiking Storm Castle and Lava Lake, and evenings grilling on the deck while deer wander the property.

Fall

Golden aspens along the river, quiet trails, great fly fishing, and Bobcat football in Bozeman, about 25 minutes away.

Winter

Big Sky Resort is about 30 minutes up the canyon and Bozeman about 25 minutes the other way. Watch for bison along the Spanish Creek road.

Spring

One of the quietest times in the canyon. Yellowstone's West Entrance, about an hour and 15 minutes away, begins reopening to cars in mid-April.

Typically stay in Bozeman, but decided to try something different. This place was great. Comparable to hotel room prices in Bozeman but without the crowds and much more room to relax. Was nice to make our own meals, this place had everything we needed. Booked on short notice and host was very responsive and made it super easy.

Beautiful property , very well maintained with everything you could need available in the house.
Perfect location between Bozeman and big sky for our trip so it gave us options for dining and activities outside of skiing.

This is my 3rd year staying at Michael's cabin in the Gallatin canyon. It's beautiful, quiet, clean, with wonderful views of Storm Castle from the front and with a quiet wooden deck tucked into some pine trees at the back, offering sun and shade and a view down the canyon from the side. Its the perfect place to relax after a long hike or time on the river. The apartment is spacious and inviting and the kitchen wants for nothing. I couldn't ask for anything better.

We had a lovely stay at the Bunkhouse. The surroundings are beautiful, and we even got a little glimpse of the northern lights one night! The space was clean and amenities worked as expected. We didn't have cell phone service in the area, but the internet was reliable for a week of remote work. The desk is wedged a bit awkwardly behind the bathroom door, but the dining table made a good workspace. The hosts were very friendly and quick to respond to messages.
